Learning more about Al Muslimaath and OUF’s joint work

Dr. Reffai describes Al Muslimaath as a “small organization,” that has been helped by One Ummah in a “large way to do many ymany projects in 1995,ever since then they have been helping in almost every project.”

Al Muslimaath’s focus is on female empowerment, especially those of single women, such as widows, divorcees, and those without male support within their families.

Dr. Reffai described the support they offer to these women: ” Earlier we used to give [these women] handouts monthly but – to our surprise- we found giving them a loan with encouragement to do some vocation in order to pay back the loan has worked wonderfully.”

” We have helped more than 100 women successfully within a year – with One Ummah and other donors’ help, alhamdulillah. If we have another million rupees(!), we could help another 100 – for we give only Rs.5000 -to Rs.25,000 (50 to 250 USD). “

“Ninety eight percent are paying back alhamdulillah and though it is coming very slowly, we are giving it back to others and this has become a continuous charity.”

In addition to female empowerment, Al Muslimaath is also aiding with the educational assistance of the poor in Sri Lanka.

Dr. Reffai described, “Buying them stationery at the term beginning, providing books, uniforms, shoes etc. in addition to a payment of about Rs.1000 a month goes a long way to help them continue their education.”

Moreover, this NGO has helped improve health services with the help of OUF by helping pay for circumcisions of boys, which is done at the cost of Rs.1200 a person (12 USD).
